Aleksandra Wisniewska Autumn/Winter 10/11

Aleksandra Wisniewska's Autumn/Winter 2010/11 collection epitomises the female form.  Strong silhouettes feature throughout with a touch of sheer fabrics underneath.  Gorgeous knits compliment the body, with soft design elements sitting quietly across the delicate shoulder, while at other times the classic cable stitch makes its mark on short sleeved jumper or dress.  Absolutely gorgeous!

Alice Euphemia's Gem: Claire Inc

Since first opening their doors back in 1997, Alice Euphemia have consistently been a support for independant Australian jewellery and fashion designers and celebrates limited production runs.

Online vintage maven Claire Inc will take up three week residency at Alice Euphemia from June 30 to July 21.  The one-off pop-up shop is upstairs at Alice Euphemia, showcasing an exciting collection of vintage and cult labels from the late 1980s and 1990s.

You’ll find a mecca of design legends such as Issey Miyake, Kenzo, Sonia Rykiel, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Yohji Yamamoto, Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix and Chanel.

The founder and director of Claire Inc, Belinda Humphris, sources, styles and edits the best vintage pieces available. Known in the vintage world as the online vintage maven who cheekily claims to be nouvelle vague and a "mighty force" who "fired Anna Wintour", Claire Inc made her name on eBay selling covetable designer pieces and accessories which were sourced mainly from Europe and the US.

So, what's the deal?  What  brings them together, you may ask?

Call it love or call it a mutual appreciation society - these girls have been long time admirers of one another.  They decided it was time to join forces.  Alice Euphemia has a reputation for spotting great talent.  Clair Inc is a gem that Alice brings from cyber space to real life.

Ivana Pilja Blitz's It

Making waves and setting tongues wagging with her recent graduate collection, young avant garde fashion designer Ivana Pilja is definitely set to go places.

Since completing her studies recently at Belgrade's College of Design, this talented designer caught the eye of FashionClash, a phenomenal concept opening doors to young, talented designers.

"The goal of FASHIONCLASH, as a foundation, is to create a ‘clash’ with ‘fashion’ as a starting point, and it is a cause I really believe in. By organising fashion projects, FASHIONCLASH aims to create a platform where ‘young’ designers/artists can present their work to a diverse international audience."

Over the past 3 years, Ivana Pilja worked her way through sportswear and streetwear fashion houses, all the while gaining invaluable knowledge.

Pilja's eponymous label has produced a collection inspired by Japanese fashion and origami, representing moving sculptures:
"This is my graduate collection, and also my first collection. It is inspired by both Japanese fashion and origami. The collection is very sculptural, with solid form and geometric shapes. Consisting of 12 pieces, the entire collection draws from dark elements to invoke futuristic and architectural form of costume. My inspiration draws from origami culture, which represents a new and innovative style. My work has an autonomy in sculpturing, the edges and the shapes of my creations are straight, strong, and simplified geometrical. Wigs also play a important and integral part in my collection. This is my first independent collection and FASHIONCLASH gave me the opportunity to show my own collection on such a wonderful international fashion event."

There's nothing shy about the work of Ivana Pilja.  With her futuristic and sculptural aesthetic she's one designer to keep an eye on.  Her work is remarkable with attention to detail, sharp and deliberate design features, to me, reminiscent of talented European designers Simon Ekrelius and her friend Marko Mitanovski.

I don't know what's causing this creative explosion in the underground fashion scene ... but all I can say that I haven't been this excited about fashion since the Blitz kids reared their heads in the early 80s.

Maybe there's something in the water ...
